The Benefits of Counselling with Intern Counsellors

Our intern counsellors are supervised by a registered psychotherapist (Tina Wilston, M.Ed., RP) to ensure clients are still receiving the best counselling they can get in Ontario. The benefits of counselling with intern counsellors include affordability, energy & training, supervision, and client load.

More affordable counselling

Counselling services with our intern counsellors will be offered at a reduced rate of $100+HST per one counselling hour. The regular fee for counselling services is set at $140-175 per one counselling hour. We also offer a pricing scale for low-income clients that can also be applied to intern counselling sessions.

Energy and Up to Date training

Intern counsellors are at the beginning of their career and are looking to pour all their energy into working with clients. They are actively studying and learning about new developments in counselling methods. Everything they are learning is fresh in their mind. Therapy and psychotherapy methods are continuing to evolve. Intern counsellor will be open-minded and focus on using evidence-based approaches that they know will be effective.

Supervised by Seasoned Professionals

Supervisors will be actively sharing their knowledge with the intern counsellors in order to help them provide clients with the best care, it will be as though clients are getting two counsellors for half the price they would be paying for one.

Smaller Client Load

Intern counsellors won’t have as heavy of a client load as registered therapists might. This means that they will have more time to focus on planning sessions and activities that are focused on helping a client’s specific case. Ultimately this results in a very personalized and flexible experience for clients.

Navigating life can be difficult, especially when you’re in new territory. Feelings of depression or anxiety can spiral into more fears and doubts. Being a young adult brings all sorts of pressure, and most of us don’t get much education in how to make that transition. It’s common to cope by avoiding, using drugs or alcohol, or isolating. Fortunately, things can improve. Life may never be perfect, but you can learn new skills and effective ways of dealing with challenges. I work with teens and adults of all ages, and specialize in helping young adults and couples who want to feel more confident, accepted, and joyful in the world. I believe in evidence-based approaches that are shown to make a long-term difference in people’s lives. I offer therapies such as dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), EMDR, and for couples, the world-famous Gottman Method. Most importantly, we will work together to identify your goals and begin a plan to work towards them. I know many people have gone to therapy in the past and still feel like they’re spinning their wheels. I can’t promise we’ll solve all of your problems, but those who are committed to working on themselves often tell me they have more certainty, confidence, and relief following therapy. Contact me today to schedule your first appointment and get started.

Meet Michael, with over 25 years of dedicated experience in the mental health field, Michael has established himself as a prominent figure in adolescent and adult mental health, specializing in sex therapy, and addressing sexual dysfunctions and gender identity concerns. He also has extensive experience in mood and anxiety disorders in both adults and adolescents. His compassionate approach, combined with an extensive background in workplace mental health, empowers individuals and organizations to achieve psychological well-being.

Michael:

Welcome! I’m so glad you’re here. My journey in the field of mental health began back in 1998, and ever since, I’ve been deeply committed to supporting individuals on their unique paths to healing and growth. At MindSpa, I believe in the power of personalized therapy, and I work collaboratively with each client to create a welcoming space that caters to your individual needs.

Throughout my career, I’ve focused on supporting adults and adolescents, survivors of trauma, and people affected by mood disorders, especially depression and chronic depression. I’ve been a therapist, a program designer and director, and a consultant to organizations, but my greatest interest is in providing therapy.

I hold a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Manitoba and a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Winnipeg. I’m continually pursuing professional development to ensure I provide the best possible support for my clients. My further postgraduate studies in sex therapy and sexuality grew out of an interest in a subject that remains misunderstood, despite the enormous role it plays in our lives and the many social changes in our views on the subject.

I’m also humbled to have received a Ministerial Commendation from Veterans Affairs Canada for my work with veterans, which has deepened my commitment to integrity, respect, and making meaningful contributions to the lives of those I serve. If you’re looking for a caring guide on your journey toward a brighter, healthier future, I would be honored to accompany you. Remember, you don’t have to face this alone—we can explore these paths together.
